How to Choose the Right Post-Surgery Bra

By Randi, Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter

Your guide to comfort, style, and support after mastectomy.

After mastectomy, your bra needs change -- but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort or style. Today's mastectomy bras are beautiful, functional, and designed for real life. With over 2,000 mastectomy bra options on Amazon alone and prices ranging from $13 to $65, the choices can feel overwhelming. Here's how to navigate it all and find the right bras for you.

What Makes a Mastectomy Bra Different?

The key difference is pockets - fabric pouches inside the cups that hold a breast form securely in place. Beyond that, mastectomy bras typically feature:

  • Wider straps for comfort and weight distribution
  • Higher necklines for scar coverage
  • Wider side panels for a smooth silhouette
  • Soft, breathable materials
  • Wire-free construction (though some styles do include underwire for extra support)

The Most Common Fit Mistakes (Learned from Thousands of Real Reviews)

Before we get into specific types, I want to share what I've learned from reading thousands of product reviews from women who bought mastectomy bras online. These are the mistakes that show up again and again in 1- and 2-star reviews:

  1. Buying your pre-surgery bra size. Your body has changed. Post-surgical swelling, scar tissue, and muscle changes all affect fit. Always measure fresh -- or better yet, get professionally fitted.

  2. Choosing a bra without a proper prosthesis pocket. The most-reviewed "mastectomy bra" on Amazon (with 68,400+ reviews) is actually a regular front-closure cotton bra with no prosthesis pocket at all. It's comfortable, but it won't hold a breast form securely.

  3. Ignoring closure type during recovery. Hook-and-eye closures can dig into scar tissue. Front-closure and front-zip designs are much easier to manage post-surgery, especially in the first few months.

  4. Skipping the band-to-cup ratio. The most common complaint across all brands: the band rides up, or the cups don't match the prosthesis size. This almost always means the band size is too large.

  5. Choosing based on price alone. Budget bras ($13--$20) often have inconsistent sizing between colors, shallow pockets, and materials that aren't breathable enough. That doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune -- but know that the $25--$45 mid-range offers much better construction for post-surgical needs.

From the reviews: "I ordered three different sizes of the same bra and none of them fit right. I finally went to a fitter and the first bra she put me in was perfect." This is the single most common story I see.

Price Benchmarks: What to Expect (March 2026)

| Category | Budget | Mid-Range | Premium | |----------|--------|-----------|---------| | Everyday mastectomy bras | $12--$25 | $25--$45 | $45--$65 | | Breast prostheses | $15--$40 | $40--$90 | $90--$350+ | | Compression garments | $25--$45 | $45--$65 | $65--$85 |

Keep in mind: Medicare allows $52.42 per standard mastectomy bra (L8000) and up to 6 per year. That means your insurance benefit comfortably covers mid-range to premium bras from established mastectomy brands.

Types of Mastectomy Bras

Everyday Bras

Your go-to daily wear. Look for:

  • Smooth fabric that disappears under clothing
  • Comfortable enough for all-day wear
  • Neutral colors (nude, white, black) plus fun options
  • Price: $45--$85

Sports Bras

For walking, yoga, gym, or active days:

  • Wider bands and straps for security during movement
  • Moisture-wicking fabric
  • Higher neckline
  • Secure pockets that keep forms in place during exercise
  • Price: $50--$75

Sleep/Leisure Bras

For nighttime or lounging:

  • Ultra-soft, stretchy fabric
  • Light support without compression
  • Pullover style (no clasps to poke you while sleeping)
  • Can hold a soft fiber-fill form
  • Price: $30--$55

Special Occasion Bras

For dresses, evening wear, or when you want to feel extra:

  • Lace details
  • Plunging necklines (with a partial form or adhesive form)
  • Strapless options (limited, but they exist)
  • Price: $55--$85

How to Find Your Size

Mastectomy bra sizing follows standard bra sizing (band + cup), but fit is even more important than usual because the form needs to sit correctly in the pocket.

Band Size

Measure snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust. Round to the nearest even number. That's your band size.

Cup Size

This is determined by your breast form size, which is fitted to match your remaining breast (for unilateral mastectomy) or your desired size (for bilateral).

The most important thing: Get professionally fitted. Sizing charts online are a starting point, but nothing replaces hands-on fitting.

My Top Tips for Bra Shopping

  1. Buy at least 3--4 bras to start -- You need to rotate while washing. Wearing the same bra every day breaks it down fast. (One of the most common complaints in online reviews: "The elastic wore out in two months." That's almost always from daily wear without rotating.)
  2. Get fitted in person for your first purchase -- After that, you can reorder your favorites online. The data backs this up: women who are professionally fitted leave significantly happier reviews on their subsequent online purchases.
  3. Don't be afraid of color and style -- Mastectomy bras aren't the sad beige contraptions they used to be. The number-one thing women say they want? Bras that look normal and pretty, not medical. Treat yourself!
  4. Replace every 6--12 months -- Elastic wears out, pockets stretch. And insurance covers replacements.
  5. Care for them properly -- Hand wash or lingerie bag, air dry. Never put in the dryer. Reviewers consistently report that dryer heat destroys prosthesis pockets and elastic within weeks.

Use Your Insurance

Most insurance plans cover 4--6 mastectomy bras per year. Medicare specifically covers 6 per year under HCPCS code L8000 ($52.42 allowable) or L8001 for custom-fitted ($135.58 allowable). That's a new bra almost every other month -- and you're paying for this coverage whether you use it or not.

Don't leave your benefits unused.

Why Professional Fitting Makes All the Difference

Searches for "comfortable mastectomy bra" have increased +220% and "mastectomy bra fitting near me" is up +160% recently. Women are looking for help -- and for good reason.

The hard truth about online shopping: The most common complaint across every mastectomy bra on Amazon, regardless of brand or price, is fit. Sizing guides don't account for post-surgical body changes, prosthesis pocket depth varies wildly, and returns are time-consuming. Professional fitting eliminates these problems in a single visit.

The access challenge: Certified mastectomy fitters are scarce. The NPI registry shows a significant shortage of registered orthotics fitters specializing in mastectomy products nationwide. Many communities have no local provider. If you have access to a certified fitter, that's a resource worth using.

At Restored by Randi, I fit you in person, help you find the bras that work for your body and your life, and handle the insurance billing. Your first visit typically takes about an hour, and you leave with bras that fit.
