What to Expect at Your First Mastectomy Fitting
By Randi, Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter
Your complete guide to the fitting process - from booking to walking out with confidence.
If you've never been to a mastectomy fitting before, you might not know what to expect. Maybe you're feeling nervous, uncertain, or even emotional about the idea. That's completely normal - and more common than you'd think.
I've been fitting women for over 15 years, and I can tell you this: almost every woman who walks through my door is nervous, and almost every woman who walks out tells me it was much easier than she expected.
Let me walk you through exactly what happens.
When to Schedule Your Fitting
Most surgeons recommend waiting 6 to 8 weeks after your mastectomy before being fitted for a permanent silicone breast form. This allows time for:
- Incisions to fully heal
- Swelling to go down
- Drains to be removed
- Your body to settle into its new shape
However, you don't have to wait 6 weeks to feel balanced. Soft fiber-fill forms can be worn almost immediately after surgery inside a post-surgical bra. These lightweight forms provide shape under clothing while you heal.
If you've had your surgery months or even years ago and never been fitted - it's never too late. I see women at every stage, and every one of them deserves to feel comfortable and confident.
What to Bring
- Your insurance card - Most mastectomy products are covered by insurance (including Medicare)
- A prescription from your surgeon or oncologist - It should say something like "external breast prosthesis and mastectomy bras, medically necessary"
- A close-fitting top - You'll want to see how things look under regular clothing
- Questions - Write them down! There are no silly questions
- A support person (optional) - A friend, partner, or family member is welcome if that makes you more comfortable
The Fitting: Step by Step
1. We Talk
The first thing we do is sit down and talk. I want to understand your surgery, your lifestyle, and what matters to you. Do you want to look exactly like you did before? Do you prefer something lighter for comfort? Are you active? Do you swim? Do you want options for different occasions?
There's no wrong answer. This is about you.
2. Assessment
With your permission and comfort, I'll look at your surgical area to understand your unique shape. This helps me select the right forms to try. I've done this thousands of times, and I approach it with the same care and respect every single time.
3. Trying On
This is the fun part. I'll bring in several breast forms in different styles, shapes, and weights for you to try. You might be surprised by the variety:
- Full silicone forms that feel like natural breast tissue
- Lightweight forms that are 30–50% lighter
- Partial forms for lumpectomy patients
- Adhesive forms that attach directly to the body
We'll try each one inside a mastectomy bra and see how it looks and feels.
4. The Bra
A great prosthesis needs a great bra. Mastectomy bras have special pockets that hold the form securely. But they're not the plain, boring bras you might imagine - today's mastectomy bras are beautiful, comfortable, and come in many styles from everyday basics to lace and color.
I'll fit you in several bras to find the ones that feel best.
5. The Mirror Moment
Once we've found the right form and bra, you'll put on your own top and look in the mirror. For many women, this is an emotional moment - seeing their silhouette restored, feeling balanced, feeling like themselves.
I've seen tears of joy in that mirror more times than I can count. And every single time, it reminds me why I do this work.
6. Insurance & Checkout
If your insurance covers mastectomy products (most do), I'll handle the billing. You may owe a copay or nothing at all. I'll explain everything before you make any decisions.
How Long Does It Take?
Plan for about 45 to 60 minutes for your first fitting. I don't rush, and neither should you. Follow-up fittings (for new bras, replacements, or adjustments) are usually 20–30 minutes.
What Does It Cost?
With insurance, your out-of-pocket cost may be $0 to $50 depending on your plan. Without insurance, breast forms range from $150 to $450 and bras from $45 to $85. We offer compassionate pricing for uninsured patients.
Tips from Women Who've Been There
Over the years, my clients have shared what helped them:
- "I was so nervous, but Randi made me feel like I was visiting a friend." - Let yourself be nervous. It's okay.
- "Bring tissues. Happy tears are real." - Your emotions are welcome here.
- "I wish I'd done it sooner." - Don't wait until you "have to." You deserve to feel good now.
- "Try on more than you think you need." - You might be surprised by what you end up loving.
