Virtual vs In-Person Fitting: Which Is Right for You?

By Randi, Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter

Both options can give you a great fit -- here is how to decide which one works best for your life and your body.

One of the first questions women ask after mastectomy is, "Where do I get fitted for a breast prosthesis?" It is a simple question with a complicated answer, because for many women, the nearest certified fitter is not around the corner. It might not even be in their state.

Search trends tell the story clearly. "Certified mastectomy fitter near me" has surged over 400% in recent searches, and "mastectomy boutique near me" is up 280%. Women are actively looking for help, and many are discovering that help is harder to find in person than they expected.

The reality is that certified mastectomy fitters are remarkably scarce. According to the National Provider Identifier registry, the number of registered orthotics fitters specializing in mastectomy products is effectively zero in many states under the dedicated fitter taxonomy code. That does not mean there are no knowledgeable fitters working across the country -- many operate under broader supplier categories or within hospital systems. But it does mean that finding a dedicated, certified mastectomy fitter near you can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The good news is that virtual fittings have changed the landscape entirely. Today, you have two solid options for getting professionally fitted: in-person and virtual. Let me help you understand what each experience looks like, the advantages of both, and how to decide which is right for you.

The In-Person Fitting Experience

An in-person fitting is the traditional approach, and for good reason. There is something irreplaceable about being in the same room with a professional who can see, assess, and adjust in real time.

What to Expect

When you arrive for an in-person fitting, you will be welcomed into a private fitting room. Your fitter will start with a conversation about your surgery, your recovery, your lifestyle, and what matters most to you. This is not a retail transaction. It is a personalized consultation.

From there, your fitter will assess your surgical area with your comfort and permission. She will evaluate your chest wall shape, note any asymmetry, check scar tissue positioning, and observe how your body has healed. All of this informs which prosthesis shapes and sizes she brings in for you to try.

You will try on multiple breast forms and mastectomy bras. Your fitter adjusts everything in the moment: strap placement, band positioning, prosthesis orientation, and overall balance. She can see immediately if something is not sitting right and swap it out. By the time you put your own clothing back on and look in the mirror, the fit should feel natural and secure.

When In-Person Is the Best Choice

  • First-ever fitting after surgery. If you have never worn a breast prosthesis before, the hands-on guidance of an in-person fitting can make a meaningful difference. Your fitter can physically demonstrate how to position your form, how to check alignment, and how different products feel against your body.
  • Complex surgical outcomes. If you had a bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction complications, significant tissue changes, or uneven healing, an in-person assessment gives your fitter the most complete picture of your needs.
  • You prefer the physical experience. Some women simply feel more comfortable being in the room with their fitter. The ability to touch and feel different materials, try multiple options side by side, and have someone physically adjust the fit is valuable and valid.
  • You live near a certified fitter. If you have access to a dedicated mastectomy fitter within a reasonable distance, an in-person visit is a wonderful option.

The Limitations of In-Person

The biggest barrier is access. With certified mastectomy fitters so scarce in many areas, an in-person fitting might mean driving hours, crossing state lines, or waiting weeks for an appointment. For women in rural areas, women with limited mobility, or women still recovering from surgery and not feeling up to travel, the in-person option can be impractical.

There is also the emotional factor. Walking into a new space during one of the most vulnerable times in your life takes courage. Some women find the idea of a fitting room intimidating or anxiety-provoking, even when the fitter is compassionate and experienced.

The Virtual Fitting Experience

Virtual fittings have grown rapidly as women realize they can receive expert guidance without leaving their homes. The search term "free mastectomy fitting" has increased 190%, and "mastectomy bra fitting near me" is up 160%, reflecting a growing desire for accessible fitting options.

What to Expect

A virtual fitting happens over video call from the comfort and privacy of your own home. You and your fitter connect at your scheduled time, and the process follows a similar flow to an in-person visit, adapted for the screen.

Your fitter starts with the same thorough conversation: your surgical history, recovery status, lifestyle needs, and goals. She then guides you through self-measurement, talking you through exactly where to place the measuring tape and how to read the numbers accurately. This is not a generic size chart. She is watching you measure in real time and can correct positioning immediately.

Based on your measurements, visual assessment through the camera, and the information you have shared, your fitter recommends specific products. She can show you images, explain the differences between options, and help you understand why one style might suit you better than another.

Products are then shipped to you. Many virtual fitting services include the option to try items at home and exchange anything that does not work. Your fitter may schedule a follow-up call to check on the fit once your products arrive, making adjustments as needed.

When Virtual Is the Best Choice

  • No certified fitter nearby. If the nearest mastectomy boutique is hours away, virtual fitting brings the expertise to you. Geography should never prevent you from getting a professional fit.
  • You value privacy. For women who feel more comfortable in their own home during such a personal process, virtual fittings offer a level of privacy that a fitting room cannot match. You are in your space, wearing your own clothes, surrounded by your own things.
  • Mobility or health limitations. If you are still recovering from surgery, dealing with fatigue from treatment, or have mobility challenges, virtual fitting eliminates the physical demands of travel. You can do it from your couch if that is what feels right.
  • Replacement fittings. If you have been wearing a prosthesis for a while and need a replacement bra or updated form, a virtual fitting is often perfectly sufficient. Your fitter can assess your current products on screen and recommend updates.
  • Busy schedules. A virtual fitting can often be scheduled more flexibly, without the added time of driving and waiting. Many women appreciate being able to fit the appointment into a lunch break or a quiet afternoon.
  • You want a second opinion. If you have been fitted locally but something does not feel right, a virtual consultation with a different certified fitter can provide fresh perspective.

The Limitations of Virtual

A virtual fitting cannot replicate the immediate hands-on adjustments of an in-person visit. Your fitter cannot physically reposition a strap or check how a prosthesis sits against your chest wall the way she could in the room with you. This means the process may involve more back-and-forth, including possible exchanges.

Camera angle and lighting also matter. Your fitter will guide you on positioning, but the visual assessment is inherently less detailed through a screen than it would be face to face.

For women with very complex fitting needs, such as custom-molded prostheses (HCPCS code L8035, covered by Medicare at approximately $594.72), an in-person assessment may ultimately be necessary to capture the precise measurements required.

A Side-by-Side Comparison

| Factor | In-Person | Virtual | |---|---|---| | Access | Limited by geography and fitter availability | Available nationwide | | Privacy | Private fitting room | Your own home | | Travel required | Yes | No | | Hands-on adjustments | Immediate, in real time | Guided self-adjustment | | Try products before committing | Yes, on the spot | Try at home with exchange options | | Best for first-time fittings | Excellent | Very good | | Best for replacements | Good | Excellent | | Best for complex needs | Excellent | Good, may need follow-up | | Scheduling flexibility | Office hours, appointment availability | Often more flexible | | Insurance billing | Handled by supplier | Handled by supplier |

What About Insurance Coverage?

Whether you choose virtual or in-person, your insurance coverage remains the same. Medicare Part B covers mastectomy bras (HCPCS L8000, approximately $52.42 each, up to 6 per year) and silicone breast prostheses (HCPCS L8030, approximately $268.31, one per side every 2 years) regardless of how the fitting was conducted. The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act protects your coverage through employer-sponsored and individual plans as well.

The key requirement is that your products are prescribed by your physician and supplied by an enrolled DMEPOS provider. A qualified virtual fitting service meets these same requirements.

The Access Gap Is Real, and Virtual Fitting Is the Bridge

Let me be honest about something that concerns me deeply. The shortage of certified mastectomy fitters in this country means that tens of thousands of women each year are either going without professional fitting guidance entirely, or they are buying products online based on a size chart and hoping for the best.

The data reflects this. Over 107,000 women undergo mastectomy each year. Of those, approximately 41% choose not to have reconstruction, meaning they will need external breast prostheses. That is roughly 44,000 women annually who need professional fitting help. Meanwhile, registered mastectomy fitters are concentrated in a handful of metropolitan areas, leaving vast portions of the country underserved.

Online reviews from women buying mastectomy products on their own paint a consistent picture of frustration. "Sizing does not match after surgery." "Hard to find proper fit without trying on." "Online sizing guides rarely account for post-surgical body changes." These are women who needed a fitter and did not have access to one.

Virtual fitting closes that gap. It is not a compromise. It is a genuine solution that brings certified expertise to women who would otherwise be on their own.

Which Should You Choose?

Here is my honest guidance after fitting thousands of women:

Choose in-person if you are having your very first fitting, you have complex surgical outcomes, and you have a certified fitter within reasonable distance. The tactile, face-to-face experience is unmatched for those situations.

Choose virtual if you do not have a certified fitter nearby, you prefer the privacy of home, you are replacing products you have worn before, or your health and schedule make travel difficult. A skilled virtual fitter can achieve excellent results through the screen.

And know that you can do both. Some of our clients start with an in-person fitting for their initial prosthesis and then switch to virtual for replacement fittings and bra updates. Others start virtually and decide to visit in person when they are ready. There is no wrong path, only the one that works best for you right now.

You Do Not Have to Figure This Out Alone

Whether you prefer to sit across from your fitter in a cozy fitting room or connect through video from your living room, what matters most is that you have someone in your corner who knows what she is doing and cares about getting it right.
